KARGIL 

Kargil is one of the two Districts of Ladakh area and is the second biggest town of Ladakh and is located approximately at a distance(200KM) from Srinagar, Leh , Padum Zanskar and Skardu Baltistan. Kargil has consistently been a significant trade centre in the past. Traders from China, Central Asia and various parts of India used to exchange Tea, Wool, Carpets, Silk and valuable stones in the past and Kargil was known as a recorded meeting point. 

Kargil got  its significance back when the region was opened up for Tourists in the year 1974 with different parts of Ladakh and an extensive number of travelers, adventurers and mountaineers began visiting Kargil. 

 

Kargil again came in limelight during the Indo-Pak conflict in 1999 as it stayed in the features of National and International media and a few areas like Tiger Hill, Tololing, Mushku valley and Batalik have gotten extremely well known from that point forward. 

Other than historical significance, beautiful scenery and number of Heritage destinations, Buddha Statues, Forts Palaces, old Rock carvings (Petroglyphs), Mosques, Monasteries, Pilgrim places , war memories are found everywhere in the District. 

Authoritatively Kargil is separated into 12 Niabats, as  Drass, Kargil, Shargole, Chiktan, TSG, G.M.Pore, Sankoo, Taisuru, Padum, Lungnaq, Cha and Zangla. Four Subdivisions are there i.e.  Kargil, Zanskar, Sankoo and Shakar-Chiktan and Seven Tehsils to be specific as Drass, Kargil, Shargole, Shakar-Chiktan, Sankoo, Taisuru and Zanskar. 

 

Kargil is surrounded by Baramullah, Srinagar and Doda Districts in south-west, Leh district in the east, Himachal Pradesh in the south, and Pakistan in the north-west. 

Kargil District is located off of 205 Kms from Srinagar and 230 Kms from Leh. It is connected with Srinagar and Leh through National Highway. The District stays cut off with the rest of the world throughout the winter  for over seven months. In any case, Leh – Kargil road stays open always. 

There is another option  for transportation to and from the District when the road gets blocked in winter that is Air Link through Leh.
